Environment Canada has issued a yellow rainfall warning for Edmonton and surrounding areas, forecasting heavy rain throughout the weekend with total accumulations between 50 and 100 millimeters.
Rainfall Warning Details
According to the warning, rain will intensify during the morning and persist through Sunday, gradually tapering off by Sunday night. Isolated thunderstorms are possible, which could locally enhance rainfall amounts. Water is likely to pool on roads and in low-lying areas, and some property damage may occur.
The warning covers most of central Alberta, with the heaviest rainfall expected just south and east of Edmonton, including communities such as Fort Saskatchewan, Wetaskiwin, Camrose, and Vegreville. In areas under an orange alert, residents can expect 70 to 100 mm of rain.
Given already saturated ground conditions due to above-normal rainfall this month, the ability to absorb additional precipitation is limited, increasing the risk of overland flooding and infrastructure impact. Localized flooding is likely, and some roads may become impassable. Significant property damage is possible.
Thunderstorm Outlook
Thunderstorms are likely over the weekend, with the strongest potential in southern portions of the province. The daily thunderstorm outlook for Saturday indicates a risk of severe storms in those areas.
