New bus depot raises accessibility concerns
Charlene Newton, a Windsor resident, has written a letter expressing concerns about the location of the new Transit Windsor bus depot being constructed at the corner of Lauzon Road and Tecumseh Road East. While she acknowledges that the depot gives the corner a nice appearance, she worries about the challenges it may pose for passengers with mobility issues.
Newton points out that buses have historically docked behind Tecumseh Mall, making it easy for people at the mall to catch a bus or transfer. She highlights the difficulties for individuals using walkers, wheelchairs, canes, blind people, those carrying heavy loads, mothers with babies and children, and elderly passengers.
Busy intersection poses safety risks
The new location requires crossing a busy intersection, which Newton fears will be especially hazardous in winter conditions such as ice, snow, and wind, as well as during summer storms. She questions whether any plan is in place to assist passengers during inclement weather.
Newton suggests that a crossing guard could be provided, or that nearby stores like Walmart, Costco, and Tecumseh Mall could contribute to a small trolley service to drop off those needing extra help. She calls it a nice courtesy gesture for those in need.
