The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is once again transforming into a winter wonderland with the spectacular return of its annual Zoolights festival. This beloved holiday tradition, now in its 29th year, promises to be the most impressive yet, illuminating the night for 52 magical days throughout the holiday season.
Biggest and Brightest Display Yet
Alison Archambault, Brand and public relations director at the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo, proudly announced that this year's Zoolights is the biggest and brightest so far. The event features a staggering over 700,000 lights arranged across 11 themed zones, creating an unforgettable experience for an anticipated 200,000 guests.
The festivities run from November 14 to January 4, with the zoo opening its gates for the light display from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Beyond the visual spectacle, the event serves a greater purpose. Money raised supports the zoo's vital animal conservancy efforts both in Alberta and around the world.
Exciting New Features for 2025
This year, visitors can discover several brand-new attractions designed to enhance the magical atmosphere. Key additions include a charming North Pole themed penguin plaza and the Sugar Plum Station located at the Enmax Conservatory.
A major highlight is the Festive Forest presented by Orange Frog Productions. The Dorothy Harvie Gardens have been transformed into Holiday Gardens, featuring the captivating Merry and Bright Tree Show presented by TC Energy.
Other transformations see the Savannah Lawn become the Luminous Lawn, while the Rocky Mountain Trail hosts the Bamboo-tique. A spectacular new 100-foot light tunnel presented by PCL now connects visitors between the Bamboo-tique and the Savannah Sparkle zone.
Festive Fun for the Whole Family
No holiday event is complete without a visit from the main man himself. Santa will be greeting guests in the Skoki Classroom nightly until December 23, before he departs for his important Christmas Eve duties.
Thanks to a partnership with Excel Homes, families can enjoy another classic treat. Carousel rides are completely free during the Zoolights event, with no age limit, allowing everyone to enjoy as many spins as they wish.
The immense effort behind this dazzling display begins as early as February, with every team in the zoo participating in the planning. The physical installation of the lights typically starts in July and August, with work often continuing right up until the opening night, ensuring everything is perfect for guests to create lasting holiday memories.
