Vancouver VFX Studio Eyeline Creates Magical Creatures for Netflix's One Piece

When viewers of Netflix's hit series One Piece encounter the gentle brontosaurus with its remarkably expressive eyelashes in season two, they are witnessing the creative work of Vancouver's Eyeline VFX studio. The visual effects house served as the lead team behind the creature work for the live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda's beloved manga, which has consistently topped Netflix's global charts.

The Art of Creating Friendly Giants

Eyeline VFX producer Gayle Munro expressed particular affection for the brontosaurus character, noting that the team intentionally designed the massive creature to appear approachable rather than threatening. "We spent a lot of time trying to make a brontosaurus face that wasn't threatening, despite its scale," Munro explained. "The eyes are the window to the soul, so we spent a lot of time on the eyes. Those cute eyelashes are the cherry on top for selling that this is a nice creature and it is their friend."

The studio's approach demonstrates how subtle details can transform computer-generated creatures into believable characters that audiences connect with emotionally. The brontosaurus serves as transportation for young characters in the series, requiring a design that balanced impressive scale with approachability.

A Diverse Menagerie of Digital Creatures

Beyond the memorable brontosaurus, Eyeline's team of approximately 180 artists created several other significant creatures for the second season:

  • A spectacular giant goldfish that adds to the series' fantastical elements
  • A fierce T-Rex that provides contrast to the more gentle brontosaurus
  • Various other digital elements that enhance the show's immersive world

The series premiered on March 10, 2024, and quickly ascended to the number one position on Netflix's Global Top 10 TV list, continuing the success of the first season. "It makes a crew who worked really hard on it super proud to see that," Munro commented about the show's chart-topping performance. "A lot of the reviews have specifically called out visual effects, so that makes the hard work even more worthwhile."

Collaborative Production Process

The creation of these digital creatures represents a significant collaborative effort between visual effects teams and live-action production. Munro detailed how the VFX team coordinates closely with on-set production to ensure seamless integration of digital elements with practical filming.

"We sent them blueprints of our brontosaurus and they built to that," Munro said regarding the physical rig created for actors. "It helps their performance because they feel like they're sitting on a brontosaurus. We get the movement from the rig, natural shadows, and good lighting. It may look like a lot of work, but it saves a tremendous amount of work at the back end."

This practical approach allows actors to interact with physical representations of the creatures during filming, providing more authentic performances and reducing post-production challenges. The live-action portions of One Piece are currently filming season three in South Africa, while the VFX work continues to enhance the series' fantastical elements.

Why One Piece Resonates with Audiences

When asked about the series' widespread popularity, Munro attributed its success to the engaging storytelling and high production values. "I just think it's like an old-fashioned, fun journey," she observed. "It's like you get caught up and swept along for the ride. Despite how fantastical and unbelievable the story arcs are, it still feels real because everything was done well."

The series follows the adventures of young pirate Monkey D. Luffy (played by Iñaki Godoy) and his Straw Hat crew as they search for the mythical treasure known as the "One Piece." The successful adaptation has demonstrated how careful attention to visual effects can help translate animated source material into compelling live-action entertainment.
