The New Brunswick Afro Fest kicks off Friday in Moncton, bringing a vibrant celebration of African music, dance, food, and culture to the community. The festival, organized by local volunteers and cultural groups, aims to showcase the rich diversity of African traditions while fostering cross-cultural understanding.
Festival Highlights and Schedule
Running from Friday through Sunday, the event features live performances by African musicians, traditional dance troupes, and storytelling sessions. Attendees can sample authentic cuisine from various African regions, browse artisan markets, and participate in workshops on drumming, beadwork, and language. According to Crystal Garrett, a spokesperson for the festival, 'This is a chance for everyone to experience the warmth and creativity of African cultures right here in New Brunswick.'
The festival will be held at Moncton's Riverfront Park, with free admission for all ages. Organizers expect over 2,000 visitors across the weekend, based on preregistration numbers.
Community Impact and Goals
Beyond entertainment, the Afro Fest seeks to build bridges between New Brunswick's African diaspora and the broader community. 'We want to highlight the contributions of African Canadians to our province and create a space for dialogue,' Garrett said. The festival also includes a job fair and educational booths on African history and heritage.
Local businesses and sponsors have contributed more than $50,000 in support, according to organizers, ensuring the event remains accessible. The New Brunswick Afro Fest is part of a growing movement across Canada to celebrate multiculturalism through grassroots festivals.
