Two Ontario Liberal leadership hopefuls are touring the northeast to pitch northern solutions as the race to replace the party's leader heats up. Etobicoke-Lakeshore MPP Lee Fairclough and policy strategist Dylan Marando are among four candidates vying for the position.
Northern-focused campaign stops
The candidates are visiting communities across northeastern Ontario to present their platforms, which emphasize economic development, resource management, and improved access to services for remote areas. Fairclough highlighted the need for better transportation infrastructure and healthcare funding, while Marando focused on supporting local industries and addressing the region's housing crisis.
"The north has been overlooked for too long," Fairclough said during a stop in Sudbury. "We need real investments that create jobs and improve quality of life."
Other candidates in the race
The Liberal leadership contest includes two other candidates not participating in this tour. The party is set to elect its new leader later this year, with the winner tasked with rebuilding the party ahead of the next provincial election.
Marando emphasized the importance of grassroots engagement, stating, "Listening to northern communities is essential to building a platform that works for all Ontarians."
Regional concerns take center stage
Issues such as the Ring of Fire mining development, forest fire preparedness, and broadband internet access were key topics during the tour. Both candidates promised to prioritize these concerns if elected leader.
The tour included stops in Timmins, North Bay, and Sault Ste. Marie, where they met with local business leaders, Indigenous representatives, and municipal officials.
