Justin Timberlake Sues to Block Release of DUI Arrest Body-Cam Footage
Pop icon Justin Timberlake has initiated legal proceedings to prevent the public disclosure of police body-camera footage from his 2024 drunk-driving arrest in New York's Hamptons. The lawsuit, filed on Monday against the Village of Sag Harbor and its police department, argues that releasing the video would constitute an unwarranted invasion of privacy.
Legal Arguments and Privacy Concerns
In the complaint submitted to Suffolk County Supreme Court, Timberlake's legal team contends that the footage captures intimate and sensitive details of the singer during a vulnerable roadside encounter with law enforcement. They assert that revealing this content could lead to severe and irreparable harm to his reputation, potentially subjecting him to public ridicule and harassment.
The lawsuit describes the video as depicting Timberlake's physical appearance, demeanor, speech, and conduct throughout field sobriety testing, his subsequent arrest, and several hours of confinement. The lawyers emphasize that the approximately eight hours of footage include the initial traffic stop, police questioning, and the administration of sobriety tests.
Background of the Arrest
Timberlake was arrested on June 18, 2024, after leaving a party at Sag Harbor's American Hotel. Police reported that he ran a stop sign and veered out of his lane while driving his BMW. Officers noted a strong odor of alcohol, bloodshot and glassy eyes, slowed speech, unsteadiness, and poor performance on field sobriety tests.
The singer claimed he had consumed only one martini and was following friends home. He spent the night in custody at the Sag Harbor Police Headquarters. Initially facing misdemeanor DUI charges, Timberlake later agreed to a plea deal that reduced the charge to a noncriminal traffic violation.
Plea Deal and Consequences
As part of the agreement, Timberlake's driver's license was suspended for 90 days, and he was ordered to complete 25 hours of community service and pay a $500 fine. He also made a public statement warning against the dangers of drunk driving, acknowledging his mistake and urging others to learn from it.
Despite this resolution, Timberlake is now seeking to keep the arrest footage private. His lawyers were notified that officials intend to release portions of the video, with redactions, to comply with public records requests under state law.

Sag Harbor Mayor Thomas Gardella stated that officials have reviewed the footage carefully to ensure it does not pose risks to police or the public.
