The Manitoba Teachers' Society (MTS) is pushing back against a provincial proposal to ban YouTube in classrooms, arguing that the platform is a valuable educational tool. Lillian Klausen, a representative from MTS, emphasized that YouTube offers diverse resources that enhance learning and engage students.
Educational Value of YouTube
Klausen highlighted that YouTube provides access to instructional videos, documentaries, and interactive content that support curriculum goals. She noted that banning the platform would deprive students of critical digital literacy skills needed in today's world.
Provincial Proposal Concerns
The proposed ban stems from concerns over distractions and inappropriate content. However, MTS believes that with proper supervision and content filtering, YouTube can be used safely and effectively in educational settings.
Klausen stated, "Instead of an outright ban, we should focus on teaching students how to use digital tools responsibly. A ban would be a step backward in preparing them for the future."
Call for Collaboration
The MTS is urging the province to work with educators to develop guidelines for YouTube use rather than implementing a blanket prohibition. They argue that a collaborative approach would better serve students and teachers alike.
As the debate continues, the MTS remains committed to advocating for resources that support modern education while ensuring a safe learning environment.
