Calgary Records Second Pedestrian Fatality in Under 24 Hours

An elderly man has died after being struck by a semi truck in northwest Calgary on Monday, February 16, 2026, marking the city's second pedestrian fatality in less than a day. The tragic incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. in the 200 block of Panatella Hill N.W., where first responders were called to reports of a collision involving a pedestrian and a semi tractor trailer.

Details of the Fatal Collision

Police initially reported that a 70-year-old man suffered life-altering injuries and was transported to hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the tractor trailer remained uninjured and stayed at the scene, according to city police dispatches. Investigators were seen closely examining the rear wheels of the semi's tractor during the afternoon, as they continue to probe the circumstances leading to the collision.

The fatal crash took place just outside a Save on Foods store in the Panorama Hills neighbourhood, becoming the eighth deadly traffic accident in Calgary in 2026. This incident follows another heartbreaking tragedy that occurred approximately 19 hours earlier, when a toddler died on Sunday after the stroller they were in was struck by an SUV at Horton Road and Hull Avenue S.W.

Previous Incident Involving a Toddler

In that earlier collision, police stated that two people accompanying the stroller in a marked crosswalk were not injured when a driver heading westbound made a southward turn at the intersection, striking the child. Authorities indicated that speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in that case. These back-to-back fatalities have cast a somber shadow over the city, occurring during what was supposed to be a celebratory Family Day weekend.

Rising Traffic Fatalities in Calgary

The recent tragedies come on the heels of a grim toll from traffic collisions in 2025, which saw motorist and pedestrian deaths in Calgary reach a 10-year high. Specifically, there were 23 motorist deaths and 15 pedestrian fatalities throughout the city last year, underscoring persistent safety concerns on Calgary's roads. The consecutive incidents have sparked renewed calls for enhanced pedestrian safety measures and driver awareness campaigns.

As investigations into both fatal collisions continue, community members are urged to exercise caution, particularly in high-traffic areas and near crosswalks. The loss of two lives in such a short timeframe has left the city grappling with the urgent need to address traffic safety issues and prevent future tragedies.
