Southern Nevada Transit Agency Expands Fleet with 50 New Low-Emission Buses
The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) has taken a significant step toward modernizing its public transit system by exercising options for 50 additional low-emission buses from New Flyer of America Inc., a subsidiary of NFI Group Inc. This move underscores a continued commitment to sustainable urban mobility in the Las Vegas metropolitan area and surrounding regions.
Details of the Substantial Bus Order
Announced on February 5, 2026, this order includes 19 sixty-foot and 31 forty-foot Xcelsior® compressed natural gas (CNG) buses, with an approximate total value of $56 million. The transaction was already accounted for in NFI's firm backlog for the fourth quarter of 2025, highlighting the company's robust order pipeline and financial stability.
This procurement is part of two existing five-year contracts between RTC and New Flyer, supported by a combination of local funding and Federal Transit Administration resources. Importantly, the buses comply with Buy America requirements, which mandate domestic manufacturing and thereby support jobs within the United States.
Enhancing Transit for Millions of Riders
The new CNG buses are slated to replace older, end-of-life vehicles in RTC's fleet. This upgrade is critical for maintaining and improving the efficiency, safety, and environmental footprint of the transit network that serves approximately 64 million annual riders across Southern Nevada.
Chris Stoddart, President of North American Bus and Coach at NFI, emphasized the longstanding partnership, noting, "For more than three decades, New Flyer and RTC have collaborated to deliver efficient and reliable transportation options tailored to the community's evolving needs. To date, we have provided over 900 buses, with more than 500 utilizing low-emission CNG propulsion."
Stoddart further highlighted the operational advantages of the Xcelsior CNG models, which offer an extended range of 350 to 400 miles per fueling. This makes them particularly well-suited for meeting the demanding schedules and distances covered by Southern Nevada's commuter routes.
RTC's Mission for Sustainable Mobility
As the transit authority and transportation planning agency for Southern Nevada, RTC is tasked with addressing complex mobility challenges and implementing both short-term and long-term solutions. Its core mission includes:
- Promoting sustainability and environmental stewardship.
- Improving regional air quality through cleaner vehicle technologies.
- Enhancing overall mobility and connectivity for residents and visitors.
- Elevating the quality of life by providing reliable, clean public transit options.
This order for 50 CNG buses directly supports these goals by introducing modern, low-emission vehicles into active service.
