Passenger Jacob Hafen described the tense atmosphere to local media, stating that everyone was made to wait for "a long amount of time at the gate" before the captain announced there was a security issue that needed to be resolved before takeoff.

The situation escalated when Gadelmoula was removed from the aircraft by an officer while holding an item. In a surprising turn of events, Gadelmoula told authorities he had brought the cleaver on board because he had gotten "a good deal" on it, according to the police report. Trang Kim, vice president of AFGE Local 1127 in Oregon, which represents TSA employees, suggested the incident might be connected to the historic 43-day government shutdown that had concluded just one day before the security lapse occurred. "No one wants to miss something of that magnitude," Kim stated. "But mistakes happen, and I am going to blame the mistake on the distractions."
