Vancouver's Burrard Bridge to Close Temporarily for Crane Removal This Weekend

Vancouver drivers should prepare for significant traffic disruptions this weekend as the iconic Burrard Bridge will be temporarily closed to all vehicle traffic on Saturday and Sunday mornings. The closure, scheduled from 7 a.m. to noon each day, is necessary for the safe dismantling and removal of a large construction crane at the nearby Sen̓áḵw development project.

Traffic and Transportation Impacts

During the closure period, all vehicle lanes on the Burrard Bridge will be completely shut down. Cyclists traveling northbound will still be able to use the east-side bike lane, but those heading south will need to dismount and walk their bicycles along the east side or find alternative routes. Pedestrians will maintain access to the sidewalk on the east side of the bridge.

Public transit will also be affected, with buses that normally cross the bridge during these hours being rerouted. Commuters are advised to check TransLink's website at translink.ca/alerts for specific route changes and updates. Vancouver police traffic personnel will be stationed at the site to help manage public movement and ensure safety during the operation.

Context and Background

The crane removal is part of the ongoing Sen̓áḵw development, a massive construction project on 1.7 hectares of Squamish Nation land adjacent to the Burrard Bridge. This ambitious development, which began construction in September 2022, will eventually feature more than 11 towers containing 6,000 rental units and 1,200 homes.

The timing of this closure coincides with what is expected to be a busy weekend in downtown Vancouver. The popular Rugby Sevens tournament at B.C. Place Stadium typically attracts nearly 70,000 fans each weekend it's held, potentially compounding traffic challenges in the area. Residents and visitors are encouraged to plan ahead, consider alternative transportation options, and allow extra travel time when navigating the downtown core during the bridge closure.
