Aryana Afghan Bakery Fulfills Saskatoon Dream with Fresh Naan and Cultural Goods

Ehsan and Fereshteh Miankhel have finally realized their long-held ambition of opening Aryana Afghan Bakery and Store in Saskatoon's College Park neighborhood. The couple, who met in the city 18 years ago, launched their business in March 2026, providing fresh-baked naan bread daily along with a selection of grocery and dry goods from Afghanistan and Iran.

From Calgary Trips to Local Enterprise

For years, the Miankhels and many others in Saskatoon's Afghan and Iranian communities made regular drives to Calgary to stock up on traditional breads, often bringing back 30 bags at a time to freeze. "People of all nationalities are always saying thank you for making this bread," Fereshteh noted. "I am so happy we are doing it ourselves now instead of driving to Calgary."

The idea for the bakery first emerged twelve years ago, but the couple hesitated after a Calgary baker warned them that Saskatoon's market might be too small to support such a venture. "He scared us. Then we backed off," Fereshteh recalled. However, as more Afghan and Iranian families moved to Saskatoon for job opportunities and affordable living, the demand grew, and no similar business emerged. "We waited for so long. Nobody else did. So we are the ones to go do it," she explained.

Daily Bread Varieties and Cultural Offerings

At Aryana Afghan Bakery, the Miankhels bake three to four types of bread each day, drawing from traditions across Afghanistan, Iran, and other regions. Their offerings include:

  • Barbari: A long, plain bread made with a mix of whole wheat and white flour, ideal for pairing with various foods.
  • Roghani butter naan: A butter-infused bread popular for breakfast, often enjoyed with jam.
  • Taftoon: A thin, soft round naan common in many Arabic countries.
  • Uzbeki naan: A soft, eight-inch circle bread from Uzbekistan.

"Our main thing is fresh daily bread," Ehsan emphasized. The bakery also stocks a range of other groceries and dried foods, catering to the culinary needs of the local community.

Community Impact and Future Prospects

The opening of Aryana Afghan Bakery has been met with enthusiasm from residents who no longer need to undertake lengthy trips to Calgary for authentic bread. The Miankhels' story highlights the growing diversity in Saskatoon and the entrepreneurial spirit driving small businesses in the city. With their dedication to quality and cultural authenticity, they have created a welcoming space that serves not only Afghan and Iranian families but also food enthusiasts from all backgrounds.
