Standard Lithium Reaches Major Operational Milestones at Arkansas Demonstration Plant

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Standard Lithium Ltd., a prominent near-commercial lithium development company, has announced the achievement of several critical operational milestones at its large-scale Demonstration Plant located near El Dorado, Arkansas. The facility, which features a fully operational brine-to-lithium carbonate flowsheet with a commercial-scale direct lithium extraction unit supplied by Aquatech, has demonstrated remarkable progress in sustainable lithium production.

Significant Achievements at the Demonstration Plant

Since its initial commissioning in 2020, the Arkansas demonstration plant has reached three major milestones that underscore its technical advancement and operational excellence:

  • Brine Processing Volume: The plant has successfully processed 1 million barrels of real brine, equivalent to 42 million gallons or 160 million litres, pumped in real-time from the Smackover Formation.
  • DLE Cycle Completion: The core direct lithium extraction technology, which will be implemented at the South West Arkansas Project, has completed over 15,000 cycles. This demonstrates performance targets exceeding 95% lithium recovery and 99% rejection of key contaminants.
  • Safety Record: Over six years of operation, the team of operators, technicians, laboratory specialists, and engineers has accumulated approximately 340,000 man hours with zero safety incidents, highlighting the company's commitment to operational safety and best practices.

Leadership Perspective on Technological Advancement

Dr. Andy Robinson, President and Chief Operating Officer of Standard Lithium, emphasized the significance of these achievements. "These accomplishments at our demo plant reflect years of technical advancement and disciplined execution by our team in Arkansas," said Dr. Robinson. "Processing and analyzing such large volumes of live lithium brine provides a unique and robust data set that supports the scalability and de-risking of our selected process technology. It also strengthens our first mover advantage in the Smackover Formation."

Dr. Robinson further noted that the plant remains the only continuously operating facility in the Smackover Formation that processes real-brine in real-time to achieve high levels of lithium recovery and contaminant rejection while producing battery-quality lithium carbonate.

Future Implications and Strategic Importance

The demonstration plant will continue to serve as a critical platform for process flowsheet optimization, operational data collection, engineering design input, and employee training. These activities are essential for de-risking the commissioning of the South West Arkansas Project, which has an initial capacity target of 22,500 tonnes of annual battery-quality lithium carbonate.

Insights gained from long-term operations will further support future project development and strengthen Standard Lithium's approach to sustainable lithium production in the United States. The company's flagship projects in the Smackover Formation, located in Arkansas and Texas, are prioritized for their high-grade resources, robust infrastructure, skilled labor, and streamlined permitting.

In partnership with global energy leader Equinor, Standard Lithium is advancing the South West Arkansas Project as a greenfield initiative and actively developing a promising lithium brine resource position in East Texas. These efforts position the company at the forefront of the lithium industry, leveraging innovative DLE technology to meet growing demand for battery materials in a sustainable manner.
