Lumissil Microsystems has announced the launch of the IS32LT3962, a high-voltage, dual-channel LED lighting controller specifically designed for 48V automotive systems. This innovative component is engineered to drive two independent high-voltage LED strings, making it ideal for applications such as high/low beam headlights, daytime running lights (DRLs), and turn signals. By integrating two functions into a single IC, the IS32LT3962 allows Lamp Driver Modules (LDMs) to reduce PCB space and simplify overall design.
Key Features and Benefits
The transition from traditional 12V to 48V automotive lighting systems brings several advantages when using the IS32LT3962. These include improved power efficiency, reduced thermal stress, and lower wiring harness cost and weight. The controller supports a wide input/output voltage range of 5V to 80V, accommodating 24V to 48V battery systems. Designers can employ flexible topologies such as buck, buck-boost, SEPIC, or boost on each channel, providing versatility for various lighting configurations.
The IS32LT3962 offers both analog and internal/external PWM dimming per channel, with optimized soft-start for enhanced low duty-cycle performance. Dual analog dimming pins facilitate LED binning and thermal current roll-off using an external NTC thermistor. Programmable undervoltage current reduction improves system robustness during supply transients. Additionally, spread spectrum operation combined with 180-degree phase shifting helps reduce system-level electromagnetic interference (EMI).
Single IC for Multiple Functions
The dual-output channel architecture enables independent brightness control for each channel, combining analog and PWM dimming methods. This allows designers to create compact lighting solutions that support multiple applications with a single IC. Aaron Reynoso, Director of Analog Marketing at Lumissil, stated: “With the IS32LT3962, automotive lighting designers can feature multiple applications such as headlamp high/low beam, turn signal, DRL using just one IC; this also reduces the wiring complexity for the system. This multi-topology, dual-channel architecture delivers precise, independent LED string controls with flexible multi-mode dimming. As a controller-based solution, the IS32LT3962 also allows designers to select external NMOS FETs to optimize efficiency and meet varying current requirements.”
Availability and Specifications
The IS32LT3962 is now available in a compact WFQFN-32 package with an exposed pad for enhanced thermal dissipation. It is specified for operation over a temperature range of -40°C to +125°C, meeting automotive grade 1 requirements. The ordering part number is IS32LT3962-QWLCA3-TR, and it is supplied in reels of 2,500 units.
