Rosie O'Donnell did not hold back her criticism of President Donald Trump during an interview at the Tony Awards on Sunday. Speaking with Variety on the red carpet, the actor and former talk show host unleashed a series of sharp remarks about the president's character and history in New York City.
O'Donnell's Childhood Memories of Trump
“If you grew up in New York, you knew he was an asshole and a liar from day one,” O'Donnell told Variety. She recalled specific incidents from Trump's past, including the repossession of his planes at LaGuardia Airport and his financial troubles. “I remember when his planes were repossessed off the runways at LaGuardia. I remember when he was broke. I remember when he would call up places and pretend to be his own publicist,” she said.
O'Donnell did not mince words when describing Trump's character. “He is a conman. He is a narcissist. And he is a psychopath, if you ask me,” she added.
Predictions for Trump at Madison Square Garden
Variety also asked O'Donnell how she believed Trump would be received at Madison Square Garden on Monday, where he is expected to attend Game 4 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs. “With a lot of boos, and I’m happy to hear it,” she predicted confidently.
Trump's Response and O'Donnell's Move to Ireland
The president had previously taken to Truth Social to accuse O'Donnell of being “obsessed” with him, suggesting she thinks about him constantly. However, O'Donnell has been a vocal critic of Trump for years, and Trump has frequently attacked her on social media in return.
After Trump won the 2024 election, O'Donnell relocated to Ireland, describing the move as an act of self-preservation. She also applied for Irish citizenship. In response, Trump threatened to revoke her citizenship, though he lacks the authority to do so since she was born in the United States.
O'Donnell announced on Instagram that she plans to return to the U.S. this summer to perform a one-woman show in New York City.
