A recent Fox News poll indicates a significant decline in voter support for President Donald Trump and the Republican Party, potentially foreshadowing a challenging midterm election season. For the first time since 2010, Democrats hold an advantage over Republicans on the critical issue of economic management, according to the survey conducted from April 17 to April 20 among 1,001 registered voters nationwide.
Key Findings on Government Management and Approval
The poll reveals that 56% of respondents believe the Trump administration has performed poorly in managing the federal government. This sentiment extends beyond partisan lines, with 4 in 10 non-MAGA Republicans expressing dissatisfaction. Additionally, 58% of voters disapprove of Trump's overall job performance, underscoring widespread discontent.
Economic Confidence Shifts to Democrats
When asked which party would better handle the U.S. economy, 52% of voters chose Democrats, marking the first time since 2010 that Democrats have led on this issue. This shift is notable given that Republicans held a double-digit advantage on the economy as recently as 2022. Trump had promised to reduce costs and inflation during his 2024 campaign, but the Labor Department reported a 3.3% increase in costs over the past year, driven largely by rising gas prices following Trump's military actions in the Middle East in February.
Voter Financial Sentiment
Only 10% of voters describe their personal financial situation as “excellent,” while 28% rate it as “poor.” Furthermore, 41% consider current economic conditions as “poor.” A staggering 70% believe the economy is getting worse for them and their families. Grocery prices are a major problem for 62% of voters, and gas prices are a major issue for 60%.
Healthcare and Housing Costs
Healthcare costs are a major concern for 55% of voters, and 52% cite housing costs as a significant problem. Trump has acknowledged wanting to drive house prices up to protect property values, but this stance may exacerbate affordability issues for many Americans.
Trump has dismissed the affordability crisis as a “con job,” a statement that has frustrated even his own base. The Republican-backed “big, beautiful” bill, touted as a solution to economic concerns, is projected to remove millions from Medicaid and impose strict eligibility requirements for federal food assistance.
The poll results align with warnings from conservative lawmakers and pundits, including current and former Fox News hosts, who have cautioned that Republicans face a difficult path in the midterms. As Democrats gain ground on the economy, the GOP must contend with voter dissatisfaction that could lead to significant electoral losses.
