Trump Claims Credit for Walmart Price Cuts as Retailer Cites Holiday Savings
Trump Claims Credit for Walmart Price Cuts

U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday praised Walmart Inc. for reducing prices on select products and urged other retailers to follow suit, framing the move as a win for American consumers. In a social media post, Trump stated he was informed that Walmart would lower prices substantially at his administration's request to celebrate the nation's 250th birthday.

Walmart's Statement Avoids Political References

Walmart responded with a statement announcing price cuts across grocery, household essentials, outdoor living, toys, and apparel. The company listed specific items including corn, beef, snacks, soft drinks, and cherries but did not mention Trump or the U.S. government. Walmart declined further comment when asked about Trump's claims.

Trump said, "Walmart is stepping up in a big and bold way, and other Retailers should follow the lead of these absolute Patriots." The president's post comes as the White House grapples with voter concerns over high costs for groceries, healthcare, housing, and utilities ahead of November's midterm elections. Trump won the 2024 election partly by pledging to rein in prices, but persistent inflation and wage growth worries threaten Republican control of Congress.

Retail Giant's Pricing Strategy

Walmart, the world's largest retailer, has long promised "everyday low prices" and uses its massive scale to secure discounts from suppliers. It traditionally advertises lower prices around key holidays like the Fourth of July and Thanksgiving. This focus has helped Walmart gain market share, including from higher-income consumers feeling financial strain. Walmart shares were little changed in extended trading in New York following the announcement.

Late last year, Trump similarly publicized Walmart's pledge to offer its lowest price in years for Butterball turkeys for Thanksgiving, claiming American consumers were seeing "across-the-board" price declines for holiday staples.

Economic Context and Challenges

Consumer prices have steadily risen since then, according to economic data, and concerns have remained elevated after U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran impacted fuel prices. However, prices of many food products have stayed similar in recent months except for beef, seafood, lettuce, and others, per government data. Walmart's cuts include corn and cherries, which typically cost less in summer, as well as products from Coca-Cola Co. and PepsiCo Inc. The retailer is also lowering prices for ground beef, which has hit fresh records as the domestic cattle herd remains at a 75-year low.

The Trump administration has sought to lower beef prices by bolstering imports, especially as consumers seek more protein and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. placed meat atop his new food pyramid.
