Costco Plans to Return Tariff Refunds to Members in Some Form
Costco to Return Tariff Refunds to Members

Costco Wholesale Corp. has announced its intention to return tariff refunds to its members should the United States government reimburse the company. The retailer is among thousands of businesses suing the U.S. federal government to reclaim tariffs collected after the Supreme Court invalidated them in February.

CEO Outlines Refund Plan

During an earnings call on Thursday, Costco chief executive Ron Vachris stated, "Our plan is to return to our members in some form the portion of tariffs that were passed on to them." He noted that the company has started submitting tariff refund forms and anticipates receiving payments on a rolling basis over the coming months.

Vachris added, "What we return and when depends on a variety of factors, including how much refund money we receive and when it arrives, as well as developments in the lawsuit filed against the company regarding the return process."

Legal Challenges and Class-Action Lawsuit

Costco is also facing a class-action lawsuit in the United States, which argues that any refunds obtained from the government should be distributed to its members. The company has not yet received any federal refunds to date.

Strong Quarterly Performance

Overall, Costco exceeded expectations for the three months ending May 10, reporting net sales of US$69.15 billion, an increase of more than 11 percent compared to the same period last year.

Gas Division Boosts Loyalty

The retailer's gas division performed exceptionally well, achieving "record-breaking volumes" as customers sought discounted fuel amid soaring prices due to the conflict in Iran. Vachris commented, "We believe this will drive even greater loyalty with these members in the future, as members who use our gas stations typically spend more with us in the warehouse."

Pharmacy Benefits from Weight Loss Drugs

The popularity of weight loss medications such as Ozempic has positively impacted Costco's pharmacy division, where customers can often obtain discounts on expensive drugs. Chief financial officer Gary Millerchip noted, "The value that we're offering in our pharmacy is really helping members take advantage of those drugs in a very cost effective way."

These drugs have also spurred demand for high-protein diets, prompting Costco to adjust its offerings. Millerchip explained, "Anything protein right now is doing extremely well. Protein bars, protein snacks, beef sticks. That's an example of an area where we're really leaning into those items because of what we're seeing from our members in the value and quality they're looking for."
