The FIFA World Cup has driven the biggest surge in Vancouver transit ridership since the 2010 Winter Olympics, according to TransLink officials. On the first match day, Saturday, June 13, 2026, the transit system saw record-breaking passenger numbers as thousands of soccer fans flocked to BC Place.
Massive Police Deployment
Approximately 1,200 police officers were deployed in Vancouver on the first World Cup match day to ensure public safety. Australia fans were seen surrounding an RCMP officer as they marched to the entrance of BC Place before the first half of a Group D match.
Ridership Records
TransLink reported that the surge in transit use surpassed all expectations, with the SkyTrain and bus networks operating at peak capacity. The previous record for transit ridership was set during the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Global Attention
The World Cup has brought international attention to Vancouver, with fans from around the world attending matches. A UK family who booked a trip to Toronto without tickets ended up attending a game in Vancouver instead.
Other news from the region includes warm weather records broken in 26 BC communities, Metro Vancouver–Sunshine Coast sailings cancelled for hull repairs, and a warm start to the week with possible thunderstorms.
