Tecumseh Mayor Gary McNamara Faces Deputy Mayor Joe Bachetti in Election
Tecumseh Mayor McNamara Challenged by Deputy Mayor Bachetti

Tecumseh Mayor Gary McNamara, who has held office since 2003, will face Deputy Mayor Joe Bachetti in the upcoming October municipal election. This marks McNamara's first opponent since 2014, when he ran against Antonello Di Millo and former Deputy Mayor Cheryl Hardcastle.

McNamara's Experience and Vision

McNamara, the longest-serving mayor in Windsor-Essex, emphasized his experience and commitment to the community. "I have the experience, and most importantly, I want to keep Tecumseh strong," he said. "I still have a lot to offer." He welcomed the challenge, stating, "It's democracy. The beauty of living in a country like ours is that everyone has certainly the ability and the possibilities of seeking higher office."

McNamara highlighted his leadership during the 2008-10 financial crises, the Bonduelle plant fire, and the COVID-19 pandemic. He plans to address economic uncertainties stemming from U.S. tariffs, particularly protecting over 300 tool and mold shops in the community. "I want to make sure that we work in collaboration with our federal and provincial counterparts to meet the challenges of today," he said.

Housing is another priority for McNamara, as Tecumseh's aging demographic requires special accommodations and attracting first-time home buyers amid rising living costs. "We need that renewal. We need to continue to have that cycle of newcomers into the community as older generations move on," he explained.

Bachetti's Platform and Community Roots

Bachetti, a retired elementary school principal and town council member for over 30 years, believes long-term succession planning will foster council growth and innovative ideas. "Me stepping up has opened up a void for the deputy mayor's position, which right now we have Coun. Tania Jobin who's filed to be the deputy mayor. So, she has an opportunity, as others do. And that, to me, is healthy," he said.

Bachetti received encouragement from community leaders to run for mayor. "Staying in touch with your residents really gives you a flavour of what they're looking for in their elected officials. So I put my hat in the ring, and I'm going to do my best in terms of serving the community," he stated. In 2022, he was elected deputy warden for Essex County, a role he said provided him with the background and governance model to lead a municipality.

Beyond politics, Bachetti is involved in community groups such as the Optimist Club of St Clair Beach, Tecumseh Heritage Centre, Sandwich South Historical Society, and St Anne Church Parish. He wants to be known for having the "people's platform" and plans to meet directly with residents to discuss the town's future. "I want to know what they feel should be the direction of this town. We're entering a new chapter, and the decisions we make in the next term about responsible grown, infrastructure, economic opportunity, community services. They'll shape our future for decades," he said.

Election Context

The election will determine the direction of Tecumseh, with both candidates offering distinct visions. McNamara relies on his long leadership history and political connections, while Bachetti emphasizes community engagement and fresh ideas.
