Michael Thompson Appointed Acting COO of Water Utilities

The city has appointed Michael Thompson as acting chief operating officer for water utilities. Thompson currently serves as the city's general manager for infrastructure services and will step into his new role on June 22, according to a news release shared on Monday.

New Role and Responsibilities

He will serve in his new role for 18 months. As acting COO, Thompson will focus on implementing recommendations suggested by the Bearspaw South feeder main independent review panel in January, which identified a need for stronger operational accountability, integration and oversight across the city's water system.

His duties will include improving system reliability and operational performance, strengthening integration across planning, capital delivery, and operations and establishing clear, end-to-end accountability for water services, the release read.

“This role is a key step in strengthening how the City delivers safe, reliable water services to Calgarians and managing risk across critical infrastructure systems,” David Duckworth, chief administrative officer, was quoted in the release. “Michael has a clear mandate to improve performance and reduce risk, and we will continue to be transparent with council and the public on our progress.”
