The Windsor Police Service Marine Unit successfully rescued two boaters on Saturday after their vessel overturned near Peche Island. The incident occurred at approximately 3:40 p.m. when officers aboard the Windsor Police Defender heard shouts reporting a capsized boat in the water close to the island.
Rescue Operation Details
The marine officers quickly located the overturned nine-foot vessel, which was partially submerged south of the island. A man and a woman, both in their 50s, were found in the water clinging to the boat. Although both individuals were wearing lifejackets, they were struggling to stay afloat due to the strong current, rough conditions, and high winds that created large swells in the area.
Police reported that the marine officers skillfully maneuvered the Defender through the hazardous conditions and safely pulled both individuals from the water. The pair sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene by Essex-Windsor EMS.
Recovery and Safety Reminders
Officers also secured the overturned vessel and towed it safely back to shore. The Windsor Police Service expressed gratitude to community members who quickly reported the emergency, emphasizing that their prompt action enabled officers to reach the scene without delay.
Police reminded boaters that water conditions can change rapidly. Strong winds, rough waves, and powerful currents can create dangerous situations even for experienced boaters. Wearing a properly fitted lifejacket can make a critical difference in an emergency.
Authorities advise boaters to check weather forecasts before heading out, ensure their vessel is equipped with required safety gear, and always wear a lifejacket while on the water.
