A snowmobiler who was separated from his group near the Yukon border on Friday was found dead Sunday morning around four kilometres from his last known location. The tragic discovery came after treacherous winter conditions and zero visibility limited rescue efforts for nearly two days.
Details of the Incident
The snowmobiler had set out with two others to retrieve a broken-down snowmachine in Haines Pass, located in northwestern British Columbia. Police were notified later Friday when he failed to meet up with his party. The group immediately began searching, but harsh weather hampered their efforts.
Rescue Efforts
Treacherous winter conditions and zero visibility limited rescue efforts until Sunday, when a break in the weather allowed a helicopter and snowmobile group access to the area. The search team, which included friends and family of the missing snowmobiler, worked tirelessly to locate him.
The missing snowmobiler was found dead at around 2 p.m. on Sunday. The B.C. Coroners Service has taken over the investigation to determine the cause of death.
Authorities Acknowledge Assistance
Atlin RCMP expressed gratitude to Capital Helicopters for their assistance in the search, as well as the snowmobile group consisting of friends and family who aided in the efforts. The community has been deeply affected by the loss.
This incident underscores the dangers of winter recreation in remote areas, especially when weather conditions deteriorate rapidly. Authorities remind snowmobilers to always travel in groups, carry emergency equipment, and check weather forecasts before heading out.
