A fire broke out late Tuesday afternoon at Mapleview Campground in Clarence Creek, Ontario, damaging several mobile homes. The blaze, which started around 5:30 p.m., sent plumes of smoke visible from nearby highways. Fire crews from Clarence-Rockland and surrounding areas responded quickly, preventing the flames from spreading to nearby wooded areas.
Rapid Response Prevents Further Damage
According to officials, the fire was contained within an hour, but not before destroying three trailers and damaging two others. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation, though preliminary reports suggest it may have originated from a propane tank.
Community Impact
The campground, a popular spot for seasonal residents and tourists, was partially evacuated. Many campers were left without shelter. Local authorities are working with the Red Cross to assist displaced individuals.
Witnesses described hearing explosions and seeing flames leap between trailers. "It was terrifying. We grabbed our kids and ran," said one camper. The Ontario Fire Marshal's office has been called in to assist with the investigation.
Mapleview Campground will remain closed until further notice while cleanup and assessments are completed.
