Calgary Science Centre to Host Live Viewing of Historic Moon Mission
The TELUS Spark Science Centre in Calgary is inviting the public to a special live viewing event for NASA's Artemis II moon mission launch this Wednesday afternoon. This gathering offers residents a unique opportunity to witness a pivotal moment in space exploration history together.
A Milestone in Human Space Exploration
Artemis II represents the first crewed mission to travel beyond Earth's orbit in more than five decades. The 10-day journey will see four astronauts—including Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen—embark on a free-return trajectory around the moon aboard the Orion spacecraft.
This mission marks several historic firsts:
- The initial human journey to lunar distance since 1972
- Jeremy Hansen becoming the first Canadian to travel beyond Earth's orbit
- A generation-defining step toward establishing sustainable human presence on the moon
Event Details and Community Celebration
The viewing event at TELUS Spark will run from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in two locations: the science centre's Infinity Dome and the Inspiration Stage. While Infinity Dome tickets are already sold out, tickets for the Inspiration Stage remain available at $10 to $15, with all proceeds supporting TELUS Spark's educational programs.
"Artemis II is a once-in-a-generation moment—and we want Calgarians to experience it together," said Guy Labine, CEO of TELUS Spark Science Centre. "Science has always been about looking up and asking what's possible. Tonight, we get to watch humans do exactly that."
What Attendees Can Expect
The event promises to bring launch day excitement directly to Calgary with:
- Live big-screen NASA broadcast coverage of the launch
- Space-related science activities for all ages
- Special door prizes for attendees
- Community celebration of Canadian space achievement
NASA's launch window is scheduled to open at 4:24 p.m. MST, with the spacecraft lifting off from Launch Complex 39B at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The mission has been years in development, overcoming numerous setbacks to reach this historic moment.
Canadian Pride in Space Exploration
The inclusion of Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen adds special significance for Canadian attendees. "We're especially proud to celebrate Colonel Jeremy Hansen, who reminds us that Canadian curiosity and courage reach all the way to the moon," Labine added in the announcement.
This mission represents not just an American achievement but an international collaboration that includes Canadian technology and expertise. The Artemis program aims to establish sustainable human presence on the moon as a stepping stone toward future Mars exploration.
For those unable to attend in person, NASA will provide live broadcast coverage and regular updates through their official channels. The space agency encourages public engagement with this historic mission that brings humanity closer to living and working beyond Earth.
