Stan Wawrinka and Gael Monfils, two of tennis's most celebrated veterans, have been granted wild cards for the 2026 French Open, organizers announced on Monday. This will likely be the final appearance at Roland Garros for both players, who have announced their retirements from professional tennis.
Wawrinka's Legacy
The 41-year-old Swiss, a three-time Grand Slam champion, won the French Open in 2015, defeating Novak Djokovic in the final. Known for his powerful one-handed backhand, Wawrinka has been a fan favorite in Paris. His career also includes titles at the Australian Open (2014) and US Open (2016).
Monfils' Showmanship
Monfils, 39, has long been one of the most entertaining players on tour, known for his acrobatic shots and infectious energy. The Frenchman reached the semifinals at Roland Garros in 2008 and has been a mainstay in the top 20 for over a decade. His wild card ensures a fitting farewell on home soil.
Other Wild Cards
The French Tennis Federation also awarded wild cards to several French players, including rising star Luca Van Assche and veteran Richard Gasquet. The main draw begins on May 25.
Both Wawrinka and Monfils have struggled with injuries in recent years but remain determined to compete one last time in Paris. Their presence is expected to draw large crowds, as fans celebrate their contributions to the sport.
