Coco Gauff's Frustration Boils Over After Australian Open Quarterfinal Loss

American tennis sensation Coco Gauff unleashed her frustration by smashing her racket against a concrete ramp following a disappointing straight-sets defeat to Ukrainian player Elina Svitolina in the Australian Open quarterfinals on Tuesday. The third-seeded Gauff, who had been on a hot streak in Melbourne with many predicting her first Aussie Open victory, fell to the 12th-ranked Svitolina in a swift 59-minute match.

Dominant Performance by Svitolina

Svitolina, riding a 10-match winning streak, dominated from the outset, stunning Gauff with a decisive 6-1, 6-2 victory. The 21-year-old American struggled with her serve early on, recording five double-faults in the first set and being broken four times. Although Gauff showed slight improvement in the second set, it was too late to mount any meaningful comeback against Svitolina's relentless play.

Gauff's Emotional Outburst and Explanation

Increasingly frustrated as the match progressed, Gauff was caught on camera smashing her racket after exiting the court at Rod Laver Arena—a moment she initially believed was private. When questioned by reporters about whether the act helped her move on from the defeat, Gauff responded affirmatively.

"Yeah, definitely," she said, adding that she did it to avoid taking her anger out on her team. "I think for me, I know myself. I don't want to lash out on my team. They're good people. They don't deserve that. I know I'm emotional. I just took the minute to go and do that. I don't think it's a bad thing. I don't try to do it on court in front of kids and things like that. But I do know I need to let out that emotion … otherwise I'm just gonna be snappy with the people around me. I don't want to do that. Like I said they don't deserve it. They did their best. I did mine. Just need to let the frustration out."

Svitolina's Dedication to Ukraine

Meanwhile, Svitolina dedicated her win to her home country, Ukraine, hoping it would bring some much-needed cheer and inspiration during a difficult time. "It's very close to my heart to see a lot of support from Ukrainians," she said. "Right now it's very—it was one of the toughest winters for Ukrainian people and without electricity and everything. So I feel like (I) bring this light, a little light, you know, even just positive news to Ukrainian people." With this victory, Svitolina earned a berth in the semifinals against top-ranked Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka.

Extreme Heat Conditions in Melbourne

The match took place under challenging conditions, as Day 10 of the Australian Open saw the Extreme Heat Policy come into effect due to searing temperatures in Melbourne. The roof on Rod Laver Arena was closed during the match, with temperatures soaring to just over 42°C (108°F) before dropping later in the day, allowing the roof to be retracted for subsequent matches.

This incident highlights the intense pressure and emotional toll of professional tennis, as Gauff's racket smash serves as a stark reminder of the highs and lows athletes face in major tournaments.
