Switzerland's World Cup round of 16 match against Colombia on Tuesday at B.C. Place is in jeopardy as several key players are battling injuries. Coach Murat Yakin confirmed that Luca Jaquez and Michel Aebischer are doubtful, while Djibril Sow, Johan Manzambi, and Ruben Vargas left training early due to injuries. Additionally, Granit Xhaka, Manuel Akanji, and Breel Embolo are being monitored for muscular overload.
Injury Concerns Threaten Swiss Hopes
Yakin expressed concern over the potential absence of influential players like Manzambi and Vargas, who have been impactful in the tournament. "If they might not play tomorrow, it can be a huge issue for us," Yakin said. "Obviously, it would be very painful if those players who ended the training session earlier today couldn't play tomorrow."
The Swiss are aiming for their first World Cup quarterfinal since 1954, having been eliminated in the round of 16 in five of their last six appearances. Yakin dismissed comparisons to 2022, when a depleted Swiss team lost 6-1 to Portugal, citing better recovery time and a different opponent.
Colombia's Strength and Fan Support
Colombia enters the match undefeated in group play, topping a group that included DR Congo and Portugal, then defeating Ghana 1-0. Yakin acknowledged the physicality and passion of South American teams, saying, "They are more robust, they are very emotional, they have a lot of passion on the pitch. ... It is going to be a completely different match tomorrow, and I think that mentality is going to be decisive."
Up to 25,000 Colombian fans are expected to travel for the game, adding to a vibrant atmosphere. Yakin remains unfazed: "We are a strong team, and we'll beat them with football and not with the fans."
Colombia's Determination
Colombian striker Luis Suárez expressed confidence, noting the team's growth. "We work every day for that. I think one of the big objectives we've talked about since before this Cup started is to be here until the very last day," he said. "In all phases of the match, whether it's during the 90 minutes we have to play, 120 even, or penalties, we're professionals and we have to be 100 per cent focused."
