A fatal crash on British Columbia's Sea to Sky Highway on Sunday shut down the busy route for hours, leaving travellers stranded and prompting renewed calls for safety improvements on the notoriously dangerous stretch of road.
Two crashes close highway
The highway was closed in both directions after two separate crashes occurred, the first of which was fatal. Emergency crews responded to the scene, but the road remained impassable for much of the day, causing significant delays for motorists heading to and from Vancouver and Whistler.
According to police, the crashes involved multiple vehicles, and one person was pronounced dead at the scene. The second crash resulted in injuries, though the extent of those injuries has not been disclosed. The identities of those involved have not been released pending notification of next of kin.
Travelers stranded for hours
Motorists reported being stuck in traffic for several hours, with some turning around to seek alternate routes or accommodations. The closure also affected public transit, including bus services along the corridor.
“We were stuck for over four hours with no information,” said one stranded driver, who asked not to be named. “It’s frustrating because this highway is known for being dangerous, and nothing seems to change.”
Calls for safety improvements
The fatal crash has reignited debate about the safety of the Sea to Sky Highway, which winds through mountainous terrain and has a history of serious collisions. Local residents and safety advocates have long called for measures such as improved barriers, better signage, and speed reduction.
“This is a tragedy that could have been prevented,” said a spokesperson for a local road safety group. “We need immediate action to make this highway safer for everyone.”
The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has not yet commented on the crash or potential safety upgrades. However, officials have previously acknowledged the challenges of the route and have implemented some improvements in recent years, including median barriers and enhanced lighting.
Investigation underway
Police are investigating the cause of both crashes. They have not released details on whether weather, road conditions, or driver error were factors. The highway was reopened late Sunday evening after cleanup and investigation work were completed.
Anyone with information or dashcam footage is asked to contact the local police detachment.
