The Toronto Maple Leafs have hired former Los Angeles Kings head coach Jim Hiller as their new head coach, the team announced Thursday. Hiller, who previously served as an assistant coach with the Leafs from 2015 to 2018, returns to Toronto after leading the Kings for parts of two seasons.
Hiller's Coaching Background
Hiller, 55, compiled a 54-38-12 record with the Kings from 2024 to 2026. He was fired by Los Angeles in April after the team missed the playoffs. Prior to his head coaching stint, Hiller worked as an assistant coach for the Leafs, Detroit Red Wings, and New York Islanders.
Return to Toronto
Hiller replaces Sheldon Keefe, who was dismissed after the Leafs' first-round playoff exit to the Florida Panthers. Leafs general manager Brad Treliving said Hiller's familiarity with the organization and his offensive-minded approach made him the top candidate.
"Jim knows our players, our system, and what it takes to win in this market," Treliving said in a statement. "We believe he is the right person to lead this team to the next level."
Hiller becomes the 41st head coach in Maple Leafs history. He will be introduced at a press conference on Friday.
