Fox sportscaster Warren Barton was struck in the head by an object during a World Cup game on Wednesday, prompting alarm from his colleague Jacqui Oatley as he began to bleed.
Barton, a former Premier League star turned soccer analyst, was on air covering Colombia's eventual 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City when Oatley drew attention to the incident.
"Warren's just busy getting assaulted by one of the fans behind us, chucking a cup. I hope it was empty," Oatley said. "... You all right?"
"Yeah," Barton replied, laughing. "I've been seeing a few double players."
Oatley's concern appeared to heighten as she noticed the injury.
"Warren's got an actual cut to the head," she said. "You're dripping with blood, I'm not joking."
"It's OK, it's good," he responded.
"What was it?" Oatley asked.
"Whatever it was, it was sharp, I'm OK," he said.
Later, Barton shared a photo of his injury after some apparent cleanup.
"Great game tonight except being hit by a bottle," he wrote on social media, along with a picture showing the wound.
