Cavalry FC faces a steep climb after a 4-1 defeat to Vancouver Whitecaps FC in the first leg of the Canadian Championship quarterfinal on Wednesday night at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C.
The two-game series concludes Monday at Calgary's ATCO Field, where Cavalry must overcome a three-goal deficit to advance.
Own Goal Sets Early Tone
The match began disastrously for Cavalry when defender Adam Pearlman scored an own goal just 69 seconds in. Attempting to clear a ball at the top of the box, he inadvertently knocked it into his own net past goalkeeper Nathan Ingham.
“It was the worst possible start we could have had,” said Cavalry head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. “But the lads showed courage to get back into it.”
Cavalry equalized in the 45th minute when Pearlman's throw-in found Daan Klomp, who volleyed the ball over Whitecaps goalkeeper Isaac Boehmer to make it 1-1 at halftime.
Whitecaps Dominate Second Half
Vancouver took control after the break. In the 61st minute, German international Thomas Müller scored the go-ahead goal, calmly steering a loose ball past Ingham after a blocked shot.
Brian White added a third goal in the 64th minute, heading in a rebound from close range. The Whitecaps sealed the win with a fourth goal late in the match.
“They’re a bloody good team,” Wheeldon said. “All we’ve got to do is try and win the game on Monday, and I think we’ve been in that place before.”
Cavalry Captain Reflects on Opponent's Quality
Cavalry captain Sergio Camargo acknowledged the Whitecaps' depth and hunger, noting that star players like Ryan Gauld and Müller made an impact after nearly 50 days without a competitive match.
“It seemed like they were itching to play,” Camargo said. “Even the big-star players like Gauld and Müller came on, and their class shows every time they’re on the field. They wanted it.”
Wheeldon remains hopeful for the home leg. “Spruce Meadows will be rocking. We owe our fans a performance. We’ll take it on the chin, dust ourselves off, and get back after it come Monday.”
