Canucks Goalie Prospect Alexei Medvedev Embraces Doubt, Aims for OHL Dominance
Canucks Prospect Medvedev Aims to Be Best Goalie in OHL

Alexei Medvedev, a Vancouver Canucks draft pick, openly acknowledges the doubts he faced during his first full season with the London Knights. The 18-year-old goalie, selected 47th overall in the 2025 NHL Draft, struggled with inconsistency after sharing crease duties with college-bound netminder Sebastian Gatto.

A Season of Adversity

Medvedev admitted that the competition was a new experience for him. 'I have never really been in that spot before,' he said. The presence of Gatto, a 20-year-old goalie brought in to bolster the Knights' championship aspirations, forced Medvedev to confront his own game. He acknowledged that he lost his way at times, but he views the struggle as a necessary learning experience.

Learning to Manage Emotions

The young goalie emphasized the importance of emotional regulation. 'Sometimes you get too high, then you stink, you start falling apart. But then you get too low and things also start falling apart,' Medvedev explained. He has worked on leveling out his emotional responses, a skill he considers critical for professional athletes.

Focus on Growth

With high school completed, hockey has become Medvedev's sole focus. He has turned to reading to broaden his perspective, including works on sports psychology and science fiction by the Strugatsky brothers, known for their Soviet-era social commentary. 'I started reading a lot. Always want to learn and kind of add to my perspective,' he said.

Ambitions for the Upcoming Season

Medvedev is determined to refine his technique this summer. 'I want to be the best goalie in the OHL. That's what I expect from myself. I think I've proved I'm ready to take that next step,' he declared. He believes that a focused approach will lead to a Canucks contract and a path to the NHL. 'London loves winners. And we win in London. We have a big year coming for us,' he added.
