Canada head coach Jesse Marsch has confirmed that captain Alphonso Davies is expected to play in Wednesday's final group stage match of the 2026 World Cup against Switzerland at B.C. Place. Unlike last week's game against Qatar, where Davies was on the bench for moral support and unlikely to play, this time he is set to make an impact.
Davies Returns to Action
When asked if there was any scenario where Davies wouldn't play, Marsch replied: "I would say that we will evaluate what we need of him in the game. I would like to get him into the match for sure, and I think that he can have a big impact both on us, like physically and football-wise, but also mentally, psychologically, to have him back, our captain back, our best player back in the team."
Davies has not played in seven weeks and this will be his first game back at home for Canada in nearly two years. It will be just his second time at B.C. Place since he left for Bayern Munich in 2019. His return is expected to generate a massive roar from the crowd.
Marsch on Davies' Impact
Marsch acknowledged the significance of Davies' return beyond his on-field contributions. "I think this is a big factor," Marsch said. "It's so much more than just what he brings on the pitch, it's what he represents to us. So, the good news is, he's looking great. He's in training, he looks great, he looks fit, he looks ready to go, he's excited. So, yeah, let's see how things go. But yeah, I expect him to play."
Davies' presence is expected to provide a massive boost to the team both physically and psychologically as Canada aims to advance in the tournament.
