When it comes to leading a team into some of the most-watched sporting events of this decade, Canadian captains have faced challenges recently. Sid Crosby and Marie-Philip Poulin, both injured early in Olympic hockey in Milan, led off the ice. Now, Alphonso Davies, captain of Canada's men's national soccer team, is unavailable for World Cup action but still making his voice heard.
Davies' Rally Cry
In a video released by Canada Soccer, Davies gave a passionate speech to teammates before their match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. He urged them to remember their childhood dreams and the sacrifices of loved ones. He concluded, 'You play for the badge on the front so they can remember the name on the back.'
When Will Davies Return?
Davies told TSN's James Duthie that his return depends on rehab and how his body reacts. He said, 'If I'm not at my best, am I playing because I want to play or because I want to help the team?' He acknowledged stepping on the pitch now would not benefit the team.
Leading in Absence
Despite not playing since March 2025, Davies commands immense respect. He is in regular contact with coach Jesse Marsch and active in group chats. Before Friday's opener, he hugged each starter and offered encouragement. He stated, 'When it's my time to speak, I speak. I'll be there to lead them.'
Quick Kicks
Canada arrived in Vancouver on Saturday, but coach Marsch was in Santa Clara scouting Switzerland vs. Qatar. Sunday was a rest day; training resumes Monday in B.C.
