Alfredsson Joins Maple Leafs as Associate Coach

Daniel Alfredsson, the former Ottawa Senators captain and assistant coach, has joined the Toronto Maple Leafs as an associate coach under new head coach Jim Hiller. The move, announced July 7, 2026, reunites Alfredsson with his longtime friend and former rival Mats Sundin, now a senior executive assistant to Leafs general manager John Chayka.

Alfredsson's Storied Career

Alfredsson, 53, played 1,246 regular-season NHL games with Ottawa and Detroit, recording 1,157 points (444 goals, 713 assists). A six-time All-Star, he won the Calder Trophy as Rookie of the Year in 1996, the King Clancy Memorial Trophy in 2012, and the Mark Messier Leadership Award in 2013. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2022.

The Gothenburg native previously served as an assistant coach with the Ottawa Senators for three seasons before making the switch to Toronto, a team he once fiercely battled during the Battle of Ontario playoff series.

Coaching Staff Overhaul

Hiller also announced the hiring of John Gruden and Brad Werenka as assistant coaches. Gruden, 56, joins after three seasons with the Toronto Marlies, leading them to a Calder Cup championship in 2025. He previously worked as an assistant with the Boston Bruins and New York Islanders, including time under Barry Trotz alongside Hiller.

Werenka, 57, comes from the University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey program, where he served as assistant coach from 2022-2025 and helped the team win a Canada West championship in 2023. A co-founder of TruPerformance, Werenka played 320 NHL games with Edmonton, Quebec, Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Calgary, recording 80 points.

Mike Van Ryn and Derek Lalonde will not return as assistant coaches next season.

Impact and Reaction

“I’m incredibly excited to add Daniel, John and Brad to our coaching staff,” Hiller said in a release. “Daniel’s experience, leadership and understanding of the game speak for themselves. John has established himself as one of the top coaches in the American Hockey League and played an instrumental role in leading the Marlies to a Calder Cup championship last season. Brad brings a unique combination of NHL experience, player development and expertise in performance analytics. Together, they’ll be outstanding additions to our team.”

Alfredsson's relationship with Sundin, despite their on-ice battles during four playoff series between the Leafs and Senators, is believed to have influenced the hiring. Sundin was the first European captain in NHL history, just ahead of Alfredsson’s appointment in Ottawa.
