Skier Falls 40 Feet from Chairlift at Banff Sunshine Village, Hospitalized
Skier hospitalized after fall from Banff chairlift

A skier was transported to hospital in stable condition after falling from a chairlift at Alberta's Banff Sunshine Village on Sunday afternoon, prompting an internal investigation by the resort.

Social Media Post Sparks Investigation

The incident came to light following a post on the social media platform Reddit, specifically in the R/Banff forum. A user shared photographs of a ski lift where an individual could be seen hanging from the seat. The post indicated the person subsequently fell an estimated 40 feet to the ground below.

In response, Banff Sunshine Village confirmed the event and launched a probe. Kendra Scurfield, Vice President of Brand and Communications for the resort, stated that while such situations are rare, safety remains the top priority for all visitors.

Resort Responds, Wishes Speedy Recovery

"I do not know the exact height of the fall, but she did slip out of the chairlift and fell," Scurfield explained. "She was responded to on the scene by our medic team and transported to the hospital via EMS. She did leave Sunshine in stable condition."

Scurfield emphasized that the resort's investigation is in its preliminary stages. She noted the fall happened later in the afternoon, as daily operations were winding down. While gathering more information, the resort's primary focus is understanding the sequence of events.

"At Sunshine, safety is our top priority, and we do wish everyone to ski and ride with care," Scurfield said. "We are currently investigating the situation to learn more about what actually occurred."

Operations Continue Uninterrupted

The spokesperson confirmed that the incident did not lead to any slope or lift closures. All terrain, including the recently opened Wild West Extreme Freeride Zone, remains accessible to guests.

"We've received over 100 centimeters this week," Scurfield added, highlighting recent snowfall. "All lifts and terrain are open... and it did not result in closures."

Scurfield concluded by extending well-wishes on behalf of the entire Sunshine Village team: "We wish her the healthiest recovery and the speediest recovery, and our thoughts are with her and her family." The resort continues to recommend that all skiers and snowboarders enjoy the slopes while exercising caution.
