The city of Windsor continues to make waves in the international sports tourism arena with the announcement that it will host the prestigious 2026 Canada Cup of Diving. This major competition is scheduled to take place from April 9 to 12 at the state-of-the-art Windsor International Aquatic and Training Centre, bringing together world-class divers from across the globe.
A Global Gathering of Diving Talent
More than 80 elite athletes representing 10 different countries are expected to compete in Windsor for the 2026 Canada Cup of Diving. The event will feature participants from powerhouse diving nations including China, Canada, Great Britain, and Australia, creating a truly international field of competition. This marks a significant return to Windsor, which successfully hosted the World Aquatics Diving World Cup last year with 119 athletes from 23 countries.
"Building on the success of last year's World Cup, we are pleased to return to Windsor for the 2026 Canada Cup of Diving," said Penny Joyce, CEO of Diving Canada. "We look forward to returning to the city once again as Windsor consistently demonstrates its capacity to host international sport events, supported by a world-class aquatic facility and strong collaboration with municipal and community partners."
Economic and Tourism Benefits for Windsor-Essex
The Canada Cup of Diving represents more than just athletic competition—it serves as a significant economic driver for the Windsor-Essex region. The event is expected to bring hundreds of visitors including coaches, officials, and enthusiastic fans who will contribute to the local economy through hotel stays, restaurant visits, and community exploration.
"The Canada Cup of Diving is exactly the kind of event that drives real visitation to Windsor-Essex," emphasized Gordon Orr, CEO of Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island and Invest WindsorEssex. "It brings athletes, coaches, officials and fans who stay in our hotels, dine in our restaurants and explore our community. After seeing last year's event sell out and exceed expectations, we know this championship has become a powerful draw for sport tourism in our region, and we're excited to build on that momentum again this year."
Olympic-Level Competition and Emerging Talent
As an officially sanctioned World Aquatics international competition, the four-day event will feature all eight Olympic diving events:
- Women's and men's 3m Springboard
- Women's and men's 10m Platform
- Women's and men's 3m Springboard Synchro
- Women's and men's 10m Platform Synchro
Spectators will also have the opportunity to witness the exciting mixed team event, adding another layer of competition to the championship. According to Diving Canada, the Canada Cup provides a unique environment where emerging young athletes can showcase their talents while competing alongside experienced Olympians and internationally recognized divers.
Windsor's Growing Sports Tourism Profile
Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens expressed pride in the city's ability to attract such high-caliber international competitions. "The City of Windsor is proud and excited to welcome the 2026 Canada Cup of Diving back to our community after last year's incredible World Cup," said Dilkens. "Our state-of-the-art Windsor International Aquatic and Training Centre presented by WFCU Credit Union has become a sought-after location for these talent-packed competitions that continue to strengthen Windsor's status as a world-class sports tourism destination."
The mayor further noted that the facility was specifically designed to attract this level of elite competition, and the community has been "reaping the benefits for our economy and our tourism and hospitality sectors ever since." This continued success in hosting international diving events solidifies Windsor's position as a premier destination for world-class aquatic sports competitions.
