Olympic Biathlete's Health Declines Following Emotional Public Confession
Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm Laegreid, who captured global attention with a tearful admission of cheating on his girlfriend immediately after winning bronze at the 2026 Winter Olympics, has revealed that the ensuing stress has taken a severe toll on his physical health.
Public Confession Leads to Physical Repercussions
In a recent interview with Norwegian public broadcaster NRK, Laegreid disclosed that he experienced a significant physical reaction following the incident in Italy. "I think anyone who has experienced something similar can understand. It was a physical reaction, that's just how it is, it's simply part of the process," he explained to the outlet.
The 28-year-old athlete detailed how the emotional turmoil manifested in tangible health problems. "It was difficult to eat and sleep. That's why I became thinner than I should have been," Laegreid stated. He expressed hope that upcoming biathlon events would provide opportunities for recovery, saying, "I hope we get plenty of good food so I can eat well and get back into shape."
The Viral Olympic Moment
Laegreid's health struggles stem from a moment that shocked viewers worldwide. Immediately after securing third place in the men's 20 km biathlon event at the Milano-Cortina Winter Games, Laegreid used his live television interview to make a stunning personal confession.
"Half a year ago I met the love of my life. The world's most beautiful and nicest person. Three months ago I made the mistake of my life and cheated on her, and I told her about that a week ago. This has been the worst week of my life," he revealed during the broadcast.
Despite his athletic achievement, Laegreid emphasized that personal matters had taken precedence. "I had the gold medal in life, and I am sure there are many people who will see things differently, but I only have eyes for her. Sport has come second these last few days. Yes, I wish I could share this with her."
Attempting Accountability and Privacy
When the interviewer attempted to redirect the conversation to his athletic performance, Laegreid remained focused on his personal accountability. "I try to be a good role model and I did something stupid," he responded. "As I said I want to be a good role model but I have to admit when I get something wrong. You have to admit when you do something you can't stand for and hurt someone you love so much."
Following the podium ceremony, Laegreid spoke with NRK again, this time declining to identify the woman involved. "I do not want to say who it is. She has had enough to deal with after last week but I hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel for us both. And that she can continue to love me," he said.
Response from the Ex-Girlfriend
While maintaining her anonymity, Laegreid's ex-girlfriend has responded through Norwegian media outlets. She wrote, "Even after a declaration of love in front of the whole world, it's hard to forgive. I did not choose to be put in this position, and it hurts to have to be in it. We have had contact and he is aware of my opinions on this."
Laegreid subsequently issued another statement expressing regret for how he handled the situation. "I deeply regret that I brought up this personal story on what was a joyous day for Norwegian biathlon. I am not quite myself and I am not thinking clearly," he told Norwegian newspaper VG.
The incident has sparked widespread discussion about the intersection of personal lives and athletic careers, with Laegreid's health struggles highlighting the profound consequences that can follow public revelations of private mistakes.
