FIFA Cancels Hotel Rooms in Host Cities Including Toronto Ahead of 2026 World Cup

Soccer fans planning to travel to Toronto for the 2026 FIFA World Cup may find it easier to secure accommodations than initially anticipated. Thousands of hotel room bookings have become available after FIFA, the international soccer governing body, began canceling reservations in Toronto, Vancouver, and other host cities across North America.

Widespread Cancellations Across North America

In Toronto specifically, blocks of hotel rooms previously reserved by FIFA are being released back into the market. Sara Anghel, president of the Greater Toronto Hotel Association, confirmed these cancellations, expressing disappointment but noting that this trend is becoming a pattern across North American cities. "So, you know, let that be a lesson … for future host countries or cities," Anghel remarked.

The scale of cancellations is significant in several key host cities:

  • Vancouver: Between 70% and 80% of FIFA's bookings, approximately 15,000 rooms scheduled from June 11 to July 19, have been canceled.
  • Philadelphia: About 2,000 out of 10,000 booked rooms were canceled, primarily affecting four hotels in the City Center neighborhood.
  • Boston: A large number of cancellations occurred, impacting an expected $100 million in tax revenue for the city's hotels.
  • Mexico City: Approximately 800 of 2,000 rooms booked for FIFA operational and hospitality staff were canceled.

Industry Response and Standard Practices

Hotel association leaders indicate that while adjusting room allocations as an event date approaches is standard practice, the volume of FIFA's cancellations is unusually high. Paul Hawes, president of the British Columbia Hotel Association, stated, "In this case, however, the volume released is higher than typically expected. It appears consistent with what is being seen in other host cities across North America."

Ed Grose, president of the Philadelphia Hotel Association, noted that FIFA did not provide a specific reason for the cancellations but was within contract terms and faced no penalties. "While we were not excited about that, it's not the end of the world either," Grose said. "These are rooms that are going to be put back out on the marketplace and sold to fans who want to come to Philadelphia."

Opportunities for Soccer Fans and Tourists

Despite initial concerns from hotels about potential financial losses from corporate events and tours, the newly available rooms present a significant opportunity for visitors during the busy summer period. Toronto has a hotel capacity of about 20,000 rooms, with an additional 4,000 in nearby municipalities, while Vancouver's capacity stands at 23,000 rooms.

Hawes emphasized that the World Cup remains a crucial part of the broader business mix during an already bustling season, with an estimated 350,000 incremental visitors expected across seven matches in Vancouver. In Mexico, Gabriela Cuevas, coordinator of World Cup efforts, highlighted that the increased room availability will help meet the anticipated record visitor numbers for the tournament.

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, these cancellations may ultimately benefit soccer enthusiasts by providing more lodging options and potentially more competitive pricing in host cities like Toronto, Vancouver, Philadelphia, Boston, and Mexico City.
