The Windsor International Aquatic and Training Centre will once again host the Canadian Masters Swimming Championships later this month, marking the second time in three years the event has taken place in the city.
Event Returns After Successful 2024 Edition
Following a well-received 2024 championship, organizers were approached to bring the national meet back to Windsor. Sherry Gibson of the Windsor Aquatic Club, serving as national meet director, confirmed the club's enthusiasm for hosting opportunities.
This year's competition, scheduled for May 22 to 24, has seen a significant increase in participation. A total of 748 athletes will compete, up from previous years, representing a diverse field from across Canada and beyond.
International and National Representation
Athletes from nine Canadian provinces will take part, along with swimmers from the United States and Great Britain. Gibson noted that nearly 84 percent of participants will come from outside Essex County, highlighting the event's broad appeal.
The largest age group is the 60-69 category, with 159 swimmers making up over 21 percent of the field. Gibson described the atmosphere as unique, emphasizing the social aspect alongside competition. Many participants have known each other since high school, creating a reunion-like environment.
Economic Impact and Accessibility
The championships are expected to provide a substantial boost to Windsor's tourism economy. Organizers report 3,250 hotel room nights booked, with an estimated $1.08 million in revenue generated for the area. The downtown location of the aquatic centre offers easy access for athletes, with hotels within walking distance.
Pre-event practice sessions are scheduled for May 21, and competition runs daily from 9 a.m. through Sunday. The event is free and open to the public, with no admission charge for spectators.
Record-Breaking Potential
Gibson highlighted the potential for national age-group records to be broken during the meet, calling it an inspiring aspect of the competition. The Windsor Aquatic Club and the Windsor Essex Swim Team will also field athletes in the event.
