Former Vancouver Canucks general manager Brian Burke has been elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame as a builder, the Hall announced on Monday, June 22, 2026. Burke, 70, joins an induction class that includes players Carey Price, Keith Tkachuk, Patrice Bergeron, Pekka Rinne and Cindy Curley. The official ceremonies are set for Nov. 9.
Burke's Legacy in Vancouver
Burke's six-year tenure as Canucks GM from 1998 to 2004 was highlighted by the franchise-defining selection of Daniel and Henrik Sedin with the No. 2 and No. 3 picks in the 1999 NHL draft. To secure those picks, Burke executed three trades. His time in Vancouver also produced numerous memorable quotes, including his remark about forward Trent Klatt: "If he can get the kind of contract he's looking for, I'll drive him to the airport." Klatt ultimately signed with the Los Angeles Kings after the 2002-03 season.
Memorable Media Moments
Burke was known for his candid and often humorous interactions with the media. During a 2002 playoff series against the Detroit Red Wings, he famously said: "I want to point out to the officials that Todd Bertuzzi does not play for Detroit. It just looks that way because he's wearing two or three red sweaters all the time. I didn't know that tackling was an acceptable tactic. I didn't see it in our rule book. Sedin is not English for 'punch me,' or 'headlock me' in a scrum. Our goaltender can be identified by the large pads and the mask he wears. He's also the goaltender on the ice that does not dive when he gets brushed."
In October 1999, Burke addressed unsigned defenceman Bryan McCabe: "Either this guy signs with Vancouver or he sits out. He's going to sign at smart dollars or I hope he has a good television set. I've told Mike Keenan not to plan on Bryan McCabe for a month." In November 1998, after quashing a trade rumour involving Alex Mogilny, Burke said: "Normally, I wouldn't respond to a drug-induced rumour out of Toronto. But I felt I owed the player that much. I told him, 'I'm not saying I'll never trade you. I'm saying I'm not trying to trade you now.'"
Career Path and Hall of Fame Induction
Burke began his NHL career with the Canucks in 1987 as director of hockey operations under Pat Quinn. He later became GM of the Hartford Whalers in 1992, then worked at the NHL head office from 1993 before returning to Vancouver as GM in 1998. After leaving the Canucks in 2004, he served as GM of the Anaheim Ducks (2005-2008), Toronto Maple Leafs (2008-2013), Calgary Flames (2013-2018) and Pittsburgh Penguins (2019-2023).
Burke becomes the eighth former or current member of the Canucks executive or ownership to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, joining Daniel and Henrik Sedin (2022), Jim Rutherford (2019), Pat Quinn (2016), Frank Griffiths (1993), Bud Poile (1990) and Jake Milford (1984), according to Sportsnet's Joey Kenward.
