St. Boniface housing development clears first hurdle

Development passes first vote

A controversial infill development plan in Winnipeg's St. Boniface area is one step closer to breaking ground after passing its first hurdle on Tuesday. The city's planning committee voted 5-2 in favour of the project, which would see 12 townhouses built on a vacant lot at 123 Rue Despins.

The development has faced opposition from some residents who argue it will increase traffic and change the character of the historic neighbourhood. However, supporters say it will help address the city's housing shortage.

Next steps

The proposal now moves to the full city council for a final vote, expected within the next month. If approved, construction could begin as early as fall 2026.

"This is a positive step toward creating more housing options in established neighbourhoods," said Councillor Mathieu Allard, who represents the area. "We need to balance growth with community concerns."

Opponents have vowed to continue fighting the project. "This development is out of scale with the surrounding area," said resident Marie Dupuis. "We will be asking council to reject it."
