Canadian tennis fans had mixed emotions on Saturday as Felix Auger-Aliassime secured a spot in the fourth round of the French Open, while Victoria Mboko saw her campaign come to an end.

Auger-Aliassime Powers Through

Montreal's Auger-Aliassime defeated Brandon Nakashima of the United States in a hard-fought third-round match, winning 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. The 25-year-old Canadian displayed resilience after dropping the third set, regaining control in the fourth to close out the match in just over three hours on Court Suzanne Lenglen. Auger-Aliassime fired 15 aces and converted five of his 11 break point opportunities to advance to the second week at Roland Garros for the third time in his career.

Mboko's Run Ends

In contrast, Victoria Mboko, a rising star from Canada, was eliminated in the third round by fifth-seeded Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan. The 19-year-old Mboko fought valiantly but fell 6-3, 6-4 in a match that showcased her potential despite the loss. Mboko, who had won her first two matches in Paris, struggled with Rybakina's powerful serve and groundstrokes, managing only one break point conversion. Despite the defeat, Mboko's performance marked her deepest run at a Grand Slam event.

Canadian Presence in Paris

Auger-Aliassime remains the sole Canadian contender in the men's singles draw after Denis Shapovalov was eliminated earlier in the week. In women's singles, Leylah Fernandez also advanced to the fourth round, ensuring continued Canadian representation. Auger-Aliassime will next face 11th seed Taylor Fritz of the United States for a place in the quarterfinals, while Fernandez takes on Aryna Sabalenka.

The French Open continues through June 7, with Auger-Aliassime aiming to improve upon his best result at Roland Garros, a quarterfinal appearance in 2023.
