A WHL spokesperson says the league remains hopeful to bring an expansion franchise to Chilliwack, but negotiations have clearly become messy. The new team is supposed to start for the 2027-28 campaign at the Chilliwack Coliseum, but talks between the city and the prospective ownership group led by Matthew Gibbons, president of Vancouver-based MRG Group, have stalled.
City and Owner Trade Accusations
Chilliwack Mayor Ken Popove stated on his weekly radio show that the prospective owners have "pretty much ghosted us." However, Matthew Gibbons countered in an email that it was the city that cut off negotiations on February 4. A league spokesperson clarified that both parties are still in communication, and a meeting occurred recently between the city and the WHL commissioner.
The Stumbling Block: Arena Management
The main issue appears to be control of the Chilliwack Coliseum. Gibbons' group wants to manage the venue, hosting events like concerts, UFC, and WWE. Gibbons stated, "What we were equally clear about was that we would not proceed with a WHL franchise without a venue management agreement. That was not a hidden condition." The city took over management of the Coliseum on May 1, after the previous operator, the Chilliwack Chiefs' ownership, stepped away.
Background on the Expansion
The WHL announced in March 2025 that it was adding a team in Chilliwack. The league selected Gibbons' group from multiple bids. The original plan was to start next season, but that was pushed back to 2027-28. The Coliseum previously housed the WHL's Chilliwack Bruins from 2006 to 2011 before they moved to Victoria. The city has committed $3.7 million for upgrades to meet WHL standards.
What's Next?
The WHL remains hopeful for a resolution, but if the city and MRG cannot reach an agreement, the league may consider other options. The Chilliwack Chiefs are expected to continue playing in the BCHL. Gibbons' group is considered a strong candidate for a WHL franchise, whether in Chilliwack or elsewhere.
