Day 12 of the Calgary Stampeders' main training camp placed the defensive line in the spotlight, highlighted by rookie defensive tackle Elijah Hills' celebratory dance after a pre-season sack. The 23-year-old from Rockaway, New Jersey, made an impression during Monday's pre-season win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders at McMahon Stadium.
Elijah Hills Brings the Dance
Hills, who recorded four tackles and a sack of Roughriders quarterback Jack Coan, performed a dance he called 'The Sexy Dexy,' inspired by NFL star Dexter Lawrence. 'I have a lot of passion for this game,' Hills said. 'And I have family that watched this game, and I know they love seeing me go out there and do my thing, so I like to stand out a little bit and celebrate.' The rookie's effort earned praise from head coach Dave Dickenson, who mentioned Hills and fellow defensive lineman Norell Pollard in his post-game comments.
Competition on the Defensive Line
Hills is competing among 17 defensive line hopefuls in camp, including nine returnees. The depth chart features a mix of veterans and rookies, with players like Miles Brown, Clarence Hicks, and Folarin Orimolade providing experience. Hills, who played college football at Wisconsin, is eager to secure a roster spot. 'Just to hear my name being called in front of the whole team, it's surreal,' he added.
Pre-Season Performance
In the pre-season opener, Hills' sack dance was a standout moment. 'Whatever comes, goes,' he said of his celebration. 'The moment came, and I just did it. I'm a big Dexter Lawrence fan, so it's the first thing that came to mind, and I just hit it.' The Stampeders continue their preparation for the regular season, with the defensive line showing promise under the guidance of the coaching staff.
