Ottawa Senators Stand Pat at NHL Trade Deadline Despite Active Discussions
Senators Make No Further Trades After Foegele Acquisition

Ottawa Senators Maintain Roster Stability as NHL Trade Deadline Passes

The Ottawa Senators' management team spent Friday gathered in offices beneath the Canadian Tire Centre, but when the National Hockey League's trade deadline arrived, the organization had completed all its business with no further transactions beyond their earlier acquisition.

Active Discussions Yield No Additional Moves

General Manager Steve Staios confirmed that despite extensive conversations with other teams, the Senators ultimately decided against making additional roster changes. "We had plenty of conversations," Staios stated. "We took the approach with this deadline that it was an opportunity, like always, to try and make our team better. So we looked at just about everything."

Staios specifically mentioned searching for a right-shot defenseman capable of playing in the team's top four, but ultimately determined he couldn't find the right fit for the organization's needs.

Recent Acquisition Provides Boost

The Senators did make one significant move prior to the deadline, acquiring winger Warren Foegele from the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night. The transaction involved Ottawa sending a second-round draft pick to Los Angeles, with both teams also exchanging conditional third-round selections.

Foegele, 29, brings valuable experience with 560 career games and 218 points (111 goals, 107 assists) to the Senators roster. Although he has recorded only seven goals and two assists in 47 games this season, his speed and penalty-killing abilities address specific needs for Ottawa, whose penalty kill currently ranks 30th in the league at 72.9 percent.

Team Confidence Remains High

The Senators enter the final stretch of the regular season with renewed optimism, having compiled a 7-1-2 record in their last ten games. Following Thursday night's 4-1 victory over the Calgary Flames, Ottawa sits just four points out of a playoff position in the Eastern Conference with 21 games remaining.

"At the end of the day, we feel very good about our team, the direction that it's moving, the way we've been playing more recently, particularly," Staios emphasized regarding the decision to stand pat at the deadline.

Players Welcome Organizational Support

The limited trade activity and Foegele acquisition have been well-received within the Senators' locker room. Center Dylan Cozens, who spent time with Foegele last summer, expressed enthusiasm about the addition. "He's a great guy who can fly on the ice, and he can put the puck in the back of the net," Cozens noted. "It's pretty exciting to add him to this team, and he's going to help us in a lot of ways."

Cozens also highlighted the psychological impact of management's decision to add talent despite the team's current playoff positioning. "We're not where we want to be in the standings this season, but we know that we're definitely still in it," he explained. "To see that they believe in us, too, and want to help us make that push is big. It shows a lot of confidence in our group."

Staios acknowledged Foegele's versatility, stating, "There's some variability with this player on where he can play in a line and what he can bring to a team, but overall we're pleased with our group and the depth of our group."

The Senators now prepare to face the Seattle Kraken on Saturday as they continue their five-game road trip, carrying the roster they believe gives them the best chance to secure a playoff berth in the season's final weeks.
