Former NBA Coach Damon Jones to Plead Guilty in Gambling Scandal
In a significant development in a high-profile gambling investigation, former NBA player and assistant coach Damon Jones is expected to become the first individual to plead guilty. This sweeping case has resulted in the arrests of more than 30 people, including reputed mobsters and other prominent basketball personalities.
Court Hearing Scheduled for May 6
A change-of-plea hearing for Jones is scheduled for May 6 in Brooklyn federal court, as indicated in a court filing on Thursday. Jones, who is 49 years old, had previously entered not guilty pleas to separate indictments. These charges allege that he profited from rigged poker games and provided sports bettors with confidential information about injuries to star players LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
In both cases, Jones faces charges of wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy. He was one of three individuals implicated in both the poker and sports betting schemes and remains free on bail pending further legal proceedings.
Background and Arrests
Jones, a former teammate of LeBron James, was arrested last October alongside other notable figures in the basketball world. The arrests included Portland Trail Blazers head coach and Basketball Hall of Famer Chauncey Billups, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, and a sports bettor accused of exploiting injury information for financial gain.
At his arraignments in November, Jones' lawyer, Kenneth Montgomery, informed the judge that they "may be engaging in plea negotiations." A message seeking comment was left for Montgomery, but no immediate response has been provided.
This case highlights ongoing concerns about gambling and integrity in professional sports, with federal authorities targeting a network allegedly involved in illegal betting activities. The guilty plea from Jones could set a precedent for other defendants as the investigation continues to unfold.
