Senators GM Staios faces crucial off-season to-do list

Steve Staios, president of hockey operations and general manager for the Ottawa Senators, faces a daunting off-season after the team was swept out of the NHL playoffs by the Carolina Hurricanes on April 25. The 4-2 loss in Game 4 at the Canadian Tire Centre marked an abrupt end to a season that showed promise but ultimately fell short.

Since taking on the dual role in November 2023, Staios has not shied away from making changes. However, the Senators have reached a pivotal stage in their development. Two consecutive playoff appearances are commendable, but the team's performance in the post-season was a step backward. The old adage that you must learn how to win rings true, and now it is time for potential to translate into production.

Off-season priorities

The hard work the Senators put in to clinch a playoff spot evaporated quickly. With the dust settled, the franchise has significant work to do to reach the next level. The bottom line is that a better Carolina team defeated Ottawa, but the Senators failed to give themselves a fighting chance. Goaltending from Linus Ullmark was solid, yet the team managed only five goals in four games against the Hurricanes.

Ullmark's inconsistent play in the first half of the season forced a heroic late-season push from being 10 points out of the playoffs in late January. However, that does not excuse the struggles of key players like captain Brady Tkachuk, Tim Stutzle, Claude Giroux, and Shane Pinto, who could not deliver when it mattered most.

Cap space and roster decisions

The Senators have $87.7 million US committed to 20 players for next season. With the NHL salary cap set at $104 million, the team has approximately $16.2 million in cap space, according to Puckpedia. Staios recently signed centre Stephen Halliday, a restricted free agent, to a two-year deal with a cap hit of $1.075 million per season.

Key unrestricted free agents include Giroux, Nick Cousins, Lassi Thomson, and Dennis Gilbert. The club is expected to move on from Lars Eller, Nick Jensen, and minor-league goalie Mads Sogaard. The most significant restricted free agent decision involves defenceman Jordan Spence, who has arbitration rights.

Time is ticking

The clock is ticking on the team's core. Tkachuk has only two years remaining on his contract, while winger Drake Batherson is one year away from unrestricted free agency. Staios must carefully navigate these decisions to build a roster capable of contending in the coming seasons.
